Failed Revolts
Before the major war between Spain and the Philippines, there were many failed attempts of revolts. As Spain had many advantages against the Filipinos, this was the main cause of the losses. Well over 20 revolts in a period of over 300 years were recorded, though not all were led by Filipino natives.
The Philippines revolution began
The revolution began in 1896 upon discovery of the anti-colonial organization Katipunan by the Spanish authorities. Andres Bonifacio was leading the Katipunan organization. The Katipunan was a movement whose goal was to demand independence from Spain. In Caloocan, the Katipunan organization made them selves a revolutionary government and declared nationwide war. Bonifacio called for an attack on the Manila, the capital of Philippines. The attack was unsuccessful. The surrounding providence rose in revolt. Emilio Aguinaldo, leader of the rebels of Cavite, won many victories before. Because of the difficulty with powers among the revolutionaries led to the execution of Bonifacio in the year 1897. They had finally made a truce that officially reached with the pact of Biak-na-bato and Aguinaldo was exiled in Hong Kong. The truce was made even though the rebels and the Spanish had never actually ceased hostility.
In 1898, with the Spanish-American war, Aguinaldo joined forces with the Americans to fight off the Spaniards. By June, the rebels had conquered nearly all of the land that Spain had held in the Philippines with the exception of Manila. Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain and thus was when the first Filipino republic was made. Spain and the U.S recognized Philippine independence. Spanish rule ended with the treaty of Paris in 1898. After a short period of time the Philippine-American war broke out.
